The Future of 5G: Through the Looking Glass

Too busy to catch up with the ongoing development of 5G? Will 5G be ready in 2020? What can we expect from anticipated 2017 rollouts? What are the capabilities and use cases of 5G? And what myths need debunking?


Attend this workshop and upgrade your knowledge and understanding on the current affairs of 5G.


5G mobile networks remain a few years away from standardization, but the lack of formal definitions has not discouraged interest, investment or declarations of deployments in various parts of the world. Even though the first phase of standardization will not be completed before 2018, academia and operators have started showcasing some of the key capabilities of 5G through trials and business cases.

We will review 5G through three lenses:

  1. Operators: Trials, promises, efforts and future roadmaps for key operators around the world?
  2. Regulators: ITU’s efforts (IMT2020), guidelines on spectrum, and timelines. Other regulators’ stand and initiatives in different parts of the world
  3. Academia: Current research in the field of millimeter waves, massive MIMO, and Internet of Things (IoT)


Even without the standardization, operators and regulators agree on some of the expectations from 5G:


  1. 50-60 times the throughput of current 4G networks
  2. Densified and seamlessly integrated access networks
  3. Need for more spectrum
  4. Compatible with IoT and M2M environment
  5. Improvement not only at Air-interface and Backhaul levels, but also regarding User Equipment capabilities
  6. Single-digit millisecond latency
  7. Support for enhanced mobile broadband services and instant-live-HD video streaming
  8. A generation gap from LTE-Advanced


We will review technical features highlighted above along with the use cases during this workshop.
